Shirley Hufstedler Biography

Shirley Hufstedler, American public servant was born in Denver, Colorado, on August 24, 1925. She was living in the Pyle house, that was built by her father in Albuquerque. She was studying at the University of New Mexico, from where she got a bachelor’s in 1945 and at Stanford Law School, that she graduated in 1949.  From 1960 to 1961, she was working as a legal consultant to the attorney general of California. In 1961, she started working as an associate justice of the California Court of Appeal. At that time, she was one of the 100 female judges nationwide.  While the presidency of Jimmy Carter, she was serving as the first secretary of education in the USA.  

In 1981, Shirley Hufstedler get back to teaching and practicing law.
