Vera Brittain Biography

Vera Brittain, English writer was born in Newcastle-under-Lyme on December 29, 1893. She was the daughter of the owners of paper mills in Hanley. She had a brother. The family moved to Macclesfield when Vera was almost 2 years old and  when she was 11, the family moved to Buxton. 2 years later she started studying at a boarding school in Kingswood.

Vera got a degree in English literature at the Oxford College, Someville. She had worked as a nurse during World War I. Unfortunately, during the war her close people died, including close friends,  fiance and her brother.

In 1925 Vera married to George Caltin, who was a political scientist. The couple had two children. John Brittain-Catlin: he was an artist painter, businessman and the author of the family autobiography that he called Family Quarter. Their daughter is Shirley Williams, the former Labour Cabinit minister.

The first novel of Brittain is The Dark Tide, it was written in 1923.  She died in 1970.
