Marie Carmichael Stopes Biography

Marie Carmichael Stopes, Scottish author  was born  in Edinburgh on 15 October 1880. She was the daughter  of Henry Stopes. He was an architect and a paleontologist. Both her parents were members of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. In 1892 she started studying  at St. George’s School for Girls. Later she was sent to North London Collegiate School.

Stopes had a serious relationship with Kenjiro Fujii, Japanese botanist, but their relationship ended.  In 1911 Stopes married to Reginald Ruggles Gates. Their marriage was annulled in 1916. The reason was kept in secret. Two years later Marie Stopes married toHumphrey Verdon Roe. They had a son, Harry Stopes-Roe. He was born in 1924. Harry became a philosopher.

Marie Stopes died at home from breast cancer on 2 October 1958.

The author is mostly known for her writing work Married Love: A New Contribution to the Solution of the Sex Difficulties .
